Taiwan Advances $4.4 Billion Investment Plan for Alaska LNG Export Project

Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs announced significant progress in negotiations for state-owned energy firm CPC Corp to participate in the $54 billion Alaska LNG project, committing an estimated investment of up to $4.4 billion. Following public statements from U.S. President Donald Trump that Taipei would purchase 30% of the project's output, Taiwan confirmed plans to buy 6 million metric tons of natural gas annually starting as early as 2032. The move aligns with Taiwan's strategy to ramp up U.S. energy imports to roughly one-third of its total supply and reduce its bilateral trade surplus, while providing Alaska LNG direct access to major Asian markets without navigating the Panama Canal.
