Morning Session – Indian Financial Market (17 Sept 2026)

Indian Rupee
The Indian rupee opened at 95.9950 against the U.S. dollar on Thursday, compared to its previous close of 95.9550 on Wednesday. Indian rupee experienced significant downward pressure, depreciating past the 96 threshold against the US dollar during morning trade. This sharp currency movement was primarily driven by heightened investor demand for safe-haven dollar-denominated assets following the US Federal Reserve's decision to enact a 25 basis point rate hike, its first in over three years. The resulting spike in US Treasury yields and a surging dollar index above 100 compounded existing macroeconomic challenges for India, including ongoing foreign capital outflows, elevated global oil prices, and unresolved geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Although the domestic currency faced aggressive selling pressure early in the session and hit a low of 96.173, it later demonstrated a mild intraday pullback as market participants actively rebalanced positions amid the broader shifting monetary landscape.

Indian Equities
Indian stock market traded with a positive bias, as the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty maintained gains despite a flat overall trend and negative global cues triggered by the Federal Reserve raising benchmark interest rates to combat inflation. Sectoral performance remained mixed, featuring selling pressure in information technology and energy alongside buying momentum in public sector banks and power utilities. Meanwhile, corporate developments highlighted regional growth, notably with Infosys expanding its development center in Indore by adding a large, sustainable software development block to support its global client base and technological initiatives. Additionally, Highway Infrastructure secured a multi-year toll management contract for the Gorakhpur Link Expressway from the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority, reflecting continued activity in domestic infrastructure projects as investors navigate evolving market valuations.

Indian Government Bonds
Indian government bonds experienced a downward trend during early trading sessions as the United States Federal Reserve implemented its first interest rate increase since July 2023, signaling potential future hikes. This significant monetary policy shift by the US central bank has heightened market expectations that the Reserve Bank of India may follow suit with tighter domestic policy measures to manage inflation and currency pressures. Consequently, the benchmark 6.94% 2036 bond yield climbed to 7.0779% from its previous closing figure of 7.0524%. Financial analysts note that elevated global crude oil prices and aggressive international monetary tightening are collectively compounding the pressure on domestic fixed-income securities and foreign exchange rates.

The 10-year benchmark bond yield was trading at 7.065%.
