Morning Session – Indian Financial Market (09 Sept 2026)

Indian Rupee
The Indian rupee opened at 94.8825 against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday, compared to its previous close of 94.8175 on Tuesday. The Indian rupee opened lower at 94.87 against the US dollar on Wednesday, September 9, declining by 5 paise from its previous close due to soaring crude oil prices and escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Brent crude climbed to nearly $99.66 per barrel following fresh Iranian attacks on United States military assets in the Gulf, intensifying worries for energy-reliant India. While the Reserve Bank of India continues its foreign exchange interventions to manage volatility, market participants are closely monitoring whether the central bank will maintain aggressive support as the currency inches closer to the critical 95 per dollar threshold, which threatens to drive up import costs and fuel domestic inflation.
Indian Equities
Indian equity markets opened lower on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, as the Nifty 50 declined 0.56 percent to 23,504.80 and the BSE Sensex dropped 0.70 percent to 75,050.68 amid cautious investor sentiment. The downward pressure stemmed primarily from rising global crude oil prices, with Brent crude nearing the critical $100 per barrel mark at $99.30 and WTI trading above $94, which threatens to inflate India's import bills and worsen inflationary pressures. Additionally, a modest weakening of the Indian rupee against the US dollar, with USD/INR trading at 94.925, compounded import costs and corporate margin concerns. While safe-haven gold hovered near elevated levels at $4,421.20, individual market movers showed sharp divergence, featuring strong gains in stocks like ESDS Software and Alkali Metals alongside notable losses in counters such as Nephro Care India and Triveni Enterprises.
Indian Government Bonds
Indian government bonds edged higher as market participants carefully evaluated the Reserve Bank of India's latest liquidity management operations, which successfully allayed anxieties surrounding potential regulatory crackdowns. Rather than implementing aggressive tightening measures, the central bank opted for variable rate reverse repo operations to absorb excess banking system liquidity, keeping inflation and asset price risks in check. This proactive approach provided a sense of relief to traders, especially as substantial inflows from a recent dollar deposit initiative significantly bolstered the nation's balance of payments outlook and eased overall external pressures. Nonetheless, lingering concerns regarding global interest rate trajectories and sovereign debt risks continue to dampen demand for longer-dated domestic paper. Consequently, financial institutions are predominantly channeling their capital into shorter-tenor instruments like treasury bills and commercial paper, while overnight indexed swaps have experienced a modest downward trend across various maturities.
The 10-year benchmark bond yield was trading at 6.955%.
