Japan secures summer LNG reserves while gold slips amid a recovering US Dollar and geopolitical tensions.

Japan has successfully secured adequate liquefied natural gas reserves through October, effectively eliminating the threat of power shortages during peak summer air-conditioning demand. JERA, the nation's primary buyer, confirmed that stable electricity supplies are guaranteed despite reduced reliance on Middle Eastern imports. To insulate the country against global supply disruptions, Japanese utilities are actively diversifying their energy portfolio by scaling up coal generation, reducing purchases from Qatar, and forging long-term agreements with alternative providers such as the United States, Malaysia, and Australia.
Gold struggled to maintain its position above the $4,100 threshold as the US Dollar staged a robust recovery from six-week lows, driven by heightened safe-haven demand stemming from US strikes on Iran and persistent expectations of future Federal Reserve interest rate hikes. This Greenback rebound was further reinforced by solid domestic economic fundamentals and attractive yield differentials, even though the broader currency market previously absorbed intense volatility from a suspected Japanese forex intervention that temporarily sent the Yen skyrocketing. Additional downward pressure on Gold originated from disappointing Chinese official business PMI figures for July and trader caution ahead of the upcoming Bank of Japan monetary policy decision, leaving the precious metal vulnerable to shifting geopolitical conflicts and central bank stances.
